The Nunavik Nickel Project (NNP) comprises 32 properties which cover a surface area of 733 km² and extend over 100 km in east-west length. Since the 1950s, exploration work has identified numerous mineralized showings on the surface and led to the discovery of a dozen magmatic-type Nickel-Copper-Platinum Group Metals (Ni-Cu-PGM) deposits. Exploration results have confirmed the fertility on the NNP’s land and demonstrated excellent potential to find other deposits in the coming years.
Historic Exploration
During the period between 1956 and 1999, some thirty companies carried out various exploration work on the NNP’s properties, including prospecting, geological mapping, geophysical and geochemical surveys and diamond drilling. Four major mineralized zones were discovered during this period. Only the Expo deposit reported mineral resources totaling 15.5 million tonnes (last update in 1997).
Recent Exploration
Canadian Royalties Inc. (CRI) began exploration activities on the NPP’s properties in 2001 and invested a total of $73.6 million in exploration, resource delineation and deposit appraisal during the period between 2001 and 2009. Exploration work led to find two new deposits and two important mineralized zones. Mineral resources reported in 2009 totaled 23.7 Mt from six deposits.
After the acquisition by Jien Canada Mining in January 2010, CRI continued its effort in seeking new deposits and in resource development of known deposits. From 2010 to 2021, total investment in exploration and resource delineation reached $112 million, including $69.6 million since 2018. During this period, the exploration work let to the discovery of four new deposits and several important mineralized zones.
Exploration Team
Based at the Expo mine site in Nunavik, the exploration team has about thirty employees, including geologists, geophysicists, technicians and Inuit workers. In addition to the significant investment, the management of CRI also supports the exploration team to use best working tools and to apply advanced technologies for improving its work performance and for ensuring its exploration success.
